Entry from: Nelspruit, South Africa Entry Title: "Jo'burg and Kruger National Park safari!" Entry: "Wow! Well, there is a lot to write but I will try my best to keep it reasonably short;), yeah right Cory says;). We are now in Durban after 2 weeks in South Africa, and we have seen a lot! We arrived in Cape Town on the 25th, and stayed 2 nights before flying north to Johannesburg to begin our southbound journey along the coast back to Cape Town within 30 days-yes, I know...a lot of land to cover, right? Yes-definitely a "crash course" of South Africa, but we both love it and want to come back-so we are not worried:). Cape Town is the second most populous city in South Africa, and is absolutely beautiful. It is one of the most multicultural cities in the world, reflecting its role as a major destination for immigrants and ex patriots to South Africa. As of 2007 the city had an estimated population of 3.5 million. We only spent a couple days there, but look forward to spending a few more at the end of our trip before flying back to Buenos Aires on the 24th. We were able to visit Robben Island (where Nelson Mandela spent 19 years as a political prisoner under Apartheid), explore the famous Victoria and Alfred Waterfront, and finally eat food with some HEAT! We were ecstatic to see so many ethnic restaurants after being in Argentina for seven weeks with not very much variety in terms of food. I think if we never eat pizza, pasta, or toasted ham and cheese again we will be content. The first night we arrived we walked right into a Thai restaurant and ate our hearts out! Two local South Africans were sitting near by and quickly started chatting with us, before buying us "Welcome to South Africa" shooters-the Springbok (half South Africa Amarula Cream/half Creme de Menth), which were pretty tasty:). After a quick taste of Cape Town we flew to Johannesburg, or Jo'burg as it is often referred to. Now, prior to flying here we have heard the usual that Jo'burg is dangerous, and if we can avoid going there we should (we were even told this by South Africans). Originally it was not in our itinerary, but we figured it would be better to start our journey from the north starting with the safari. This way, if we didn't get lucky seeing animals at Kruger, we would have enough time to visit different parks along the route south (instead of taking the risk of ending our journey with a safari not seeing to much). So, Jo'burg it was:). Even though we were only there for a full day, we wanted to make the best of it and visit a museum or see a few sites. We decided to visit the Apartheid Museum http://www.apartheidmuseum.org/ which was worth every minute. We were advised that 2 hours was not enough time to really get the most out of the museum, so we arranged for a taxi to pick us up 5 hours later, allowing us about 3 1/2 hours in the museum after eating lunch. Well, we were actually rushing through the last few exhibits which was unfortunate. We could have easily stayed in there another 2 hours! Talk about an emotional experience-feelings of shock, sadness, disbelief, anger, hope...I could go on and on. The fact that these atrocities occurred in recent times (relatively speaking) is mind boggling. I question humanity when being reminded of these sad times in our history. We both left the building feeling pretty heavy, without words to describe what was just taken in. The very next morning bright and early we were off to Nelspruit-the springboard for Kruger National Park. We were excited about our 3 day safari, which we booked immediately once checked into our hostel. We stayed at Old Vic Inn, which is run by "Crazy Dave" and his wife Bella. The place was very nice, and the hosts made it even better! After a day and night of relaxation, we woke up at 3:30 am, had breakfast at 4-and we were off to Kruger with Dave and another couple from Japan for the following 3 days. We arrived at the gate at 5:30am, and upon entry into the park (which is the ..." "Johannesburg - Race, Religion, Reconciliation" Alleifer's photos around Johannesburg, South Africa

Preview of Alleifer's blog at TravelPod. Read the full blog here: http://www.travelpod.com/travel-blog-entries/alleifer/5/1217111160/tpod.html This blog preview was made by TravelPod using the TripAdvisor™ TripWow slideshow creator. Entry from: Johannesburg, South Africa Entry Title: "Johannesburg - Race, Religion, Reconciliation" Entry: "South African Airways did OK by us. Even though it was 24 hours door-to-door, adequate leg room, 3 meals (even if they all were kosher chicken meals) and a screen behind every seat made the flight tolerable. We each dealt with the long flight in our own way. I made it through Frommer's and the first half of Nelson Mandela's biography. "A Long Walk to Freedom", Becca slept for most of the 17-hour leg from Washington to Johannesburg, Marcia watched three feature films and Jessica watched 19 episodes of Prison Break. It is winter in Johannesburg, so it was already dark at 5:30 pm when we landed at Oliver Tambo airport and, while not freezing, it was certainly nippy as we waited for our shuttle from the Westcliff to come pick us up. Johannesburg is a city literally built on gold. With 7 million people, it is one of the 2 or 3 biggest cities in Africa, the wealthiest on the continent and it is one of the only major cities in the world not built near a river or ocean port. The city is the most southern and the most elevated major city in the world, with an altitude higher than Denver. Besides the jet lag, the altitude takes some getting used to. We lucked out finding The Westcliff available on hotels.com. We have luxury accommodations, a great location, and a magnificent view of the forested hillsides and the Johannesburg Zoo. Our first morning we set out to explore the context of modern Johannesburg. Our guide Robin Binckes uses personal history, story telling and incredible access to the diversity of Johannesburg to help us understand the New South Africa. Robin is in his sixties descended from and English family that came to this area in the 1820's. Having served in the South African navy and been a supporter of apartheid, Robin has dedicated himself since 1993 to fostering understanding and compassion between the races and to help visitors get a sense of the complexities of the society here. A country of nearly 50 million, South Africa is made up of only 10% whites of European descent, half of whom are native English speakers and half speak Afrikaans. The other 90% are blacks or of mixed race with 9 official languages (mostly Zulu, Xhosa and Sotho) and several more unofficial languages. So far, everyone we have run into speaks English fairly well. Our first day is divided into 4 parts - viewing (and buying) the art and artifacts of the entire African continent, understanding the workings and legacy of apartheid (primarily through the life story of Nelson Mandela), experiencing the contrast of modern day Johannesburg, and interacting with the Jewish community of South Africa. We start with a private tour of Amatuli Fine Art Company, whose owner, Mark Valentine spends 40% of the year collecting thousands of pieces of art and artifacts from all over the continent. Mark is a must stop for the likes of Bill Clinton and Bill Gates and we are privileged to be part of such an august list of visitors. After our coffers are filled with Ostrich eggs, necklaces, earrings, masks, elephant pins and assorted tchochkes, we are off to understand the political history of South Africa. For me, a deeper understanding of the system of apartheid is important because of the current political fad for Israel's opponents to label its actions as apartheid. After 250 years of struggling for freedom and independence, the 5% of South Africans that were known as Boers (generally descendants of Dutch, ..."
