South African Defence Force: The Citizen Force at War (1966-1989)

After completing their two years of military service, South African conscripts were alotted to the Citizen Force. Here they served for ten years, 60 days per year. The Citizen Force made up the bulk of the SADF's conventional forces and included first class fighting units such as the 1st Transvaal Scottish, the Rand Light Infantry or the Natal Carbineers. The units were deployed operationally during the border war (1966-1989). Up to 1990 the units experienced a reporting rate of over 100 percent, given that many men volunteered. After 1990 the reporting rate dropped dramatically as people realised that the war was finally over and the Government was preparing to hand power to the ANC. After 1994 most units were disbanded.

South African Defence Force: Border War Firefight

By the mid-1980s the SADF was modernised to the point where it was able to conduct both conventional and counterinsurgency operations. The footage depicts the quality of the Infantry in fire and movement as well as trench-clearing. Infantry tactics focused on aggression and personal initiative during the firefight. Note the weapon-handling of the conscripts, suggesting a high level of discipline, as well as confidence in the weapons themselves. Given the relatively small size of the white population in South Africa, the military was nevertheless, much like the Rhodesians, quite loss-averse.
