SADF Operation Packer (1988) Part 1
Operation Packer was a military operation by the South African Defence Force (SADF) during the South African Border War and Angolan Civil War. This operation forms part of what became known as the Battle of Cuito Cuanavale. Although officially following on from Operation Hooper, Operation Packer was in reality concurrent with it most of the time, as its objective was to drive the combined FAPLA/Cuban force back across the Cuito River to the west bank. This task was successfully achieved by the South African forces' GV5 and GV6 howitzers, who forced the FAPLA/Cuban units to the west of the Cuito River from their positions east of Cuito Cuanavale on the Chambinga Heights. http://www.geocities.ws/sa_bushwar11/

The Buffel is a mine-protected APC used by the South African Army during the South African Border War. It was certainly not the most comfortable vehicle, but it offered the necessary protection against mine attack. The Buffel was also used as an armoured fighting vehicle and proved itself in this role. It has been replaced by the Mamba in South Africa, but remains in use elsewhere, notably Sri Lanka.

Mirage F1 SAAF Angola Border War - Africa Travel Channel
The South African Air Force (SAAF) flew both the Mirage F1 AZ ground-attack version as well as the radar-equipped Mirage F1 CZ fighter during the Angola Border War. The first two examples of the first order (48 aircraft, comprising 32 F1AZ and 16 F1CZ) were delivered on 5 April 1975. Both of these F1CZs were transported under a blanket of secrecy by a SAAF C-130 Hercules. In July of the same year, the remainder of the F1CZs were delivered, and 3 Squadron was re-commissioned to operate the aircraft from AFB Waterkloof. South African Defence Force: The End
By the end of the Border War (1989) the SADF had introduced modern weaponry and completed its transformation from the World War 2-type of military it was until 1970, into an effective, modern war-fighting institution. At the peak of its power, the political direction of the country prevented a final showdown between the SADF and its opponents. The South African government accepted a political settlement that brought SWAPO to power in Namibia. Subsequently, the gradual end of white rule in South Africa, the final phase of which was introduced in 1990 and completed by 1994, also led to the demise of the SADF. A further consequence of these developments is the inevitable extinction of Africa's remaining white tribes, that of the Afrikaners in particular. While it is a matter of debate whether there were any viable alternatives, it is nevertheless historically unique, that people surrender power voluntarily into the hands of their former enemies, relying solely on the vague hope of being spared. Unfortunately, on the banquet-table of history, one gets what one can take. And one keeps what one can hold. There are no reserved seats and it doesn't pay to be noble.
